In short CapCut is coming to ChatGPT as a plugin soon. You’ll ask for a video in the chat and CapCut does the editing. The full plugin isn’t out for everyone yet. An early version already runs in the ChatGPT desktop app via CapCut × Codex, but it needs its own setup. You can already use ChatGPT and the regular CapCut app together.

What is the CapCut plugin for ChatGPT?

CapCut is a well-known app for cutting and editing videos, especially short clips for social media. On Saturday 24 October 2026, CapCut announced on X that a CapCut plugin is coming soon to ChatGPT: an add-on you use right inside ChatGPT. OpenAI calls these ‘apps in ChatGPT’. The news came at CapCut World, a CapCut event in Los Angeles, and the post has been viewed more than a million times.

The idea, according to CapCut: you start with an idea in ChatGPT, the plugin turns it into a video right inside ChatGPT, then you take it to CapCut’s web editor to refine, share and publish.

How it works in CapCut’s demo video

In the announcement video, someone uploads five short football clips and asks for a 12-second highlight reel. The CapCut plugin first replies with a short brief: 12 seconds, vertical, like on TikTok (9:16), fast cuts on the beat. Then a CapCut timeline with the edit opens next to the chat. A second request adds a big ‘GOAL!’ title from the strike to the end.

When can you use CapCut in ChatGPT?

Try it now: make videos with ChatGPT and CapCut

No need to wait. Let ChatGPT do the thinking and edit the video yourself in the CapCut app. Don’t have ChatGPT yet? Start with our ChatGPT sign-up guide.

  1. Get a plan: “I want to make a 30-second video of our weekend at the seaside for Instagram. Give me a simple shot list: what to film, in what order and how long each part should be.”
  2. Ask for on-screen text: “Come up with three short lines of text I can put on screen. Five words max each.”
  3. Ask how the CapCut app works: “I’m a beginner using CapCut on my phone. Explain step by step how to trim clips, add text and put music under it.”
  4. Write the caption: “Write a short Instagram caption for our video of a weekend at the seaside. Cheerful but not over the top, with two emoji at most.”

The CapCut app is free to download. Some extras, such as auto captions and AI-generated video, are part of the paid Pro plan.

Making videos with AI safely: what to watch out for

Safety tip Only download CapCut from the App Store, Google Play or capcut.com, and don’t click ‘early access’ offers from unknown sites. Read how to spot fake ChatGPT ads. Also note that, according to OpenAI, an app in ChatGPT can use information from your conversation, and from your memory if it’s turned on. So don’t share private details like addresses or bank numbers in that chat. Don’t upload videos of other people without their permission, especially children. And always check the result yourself before you share it.
