What can ChatGPT do with your iCloud Mail and Calendar?
ChatGPT could already connect to Gmail and Google Calendar through plugins. Now there are two for Apple: iCloud Mail and iCloud Calendar. According to OpenAI, you can ask ChatGPT to find an email, quickly see what’s new in your inbox, check what’s next in your calendar or update an event. According to MacRumors, the Mail plugin can also manage messages and drafts and send email. Both plugins can look up your iCloud contacts, but not change them.
Who can use the iCloud plugins in ChatGPT?
- Plan: every ChatGPT plan, including free. It’s rolling out gradually, so you may not see it yet.
- Devices: the chatgpt.com website, the desktop app and the iPhone app. The Android app isn’t mentioned. On Android? Try chatgpt.com in your browser.
- Email address: the Mail plugin only works with an iCloud address ending in @icloud.com, @me.com or @mac.com. A Gmail or Outlook account in your iPhone’s Mail app doesn’t count.
- Belgium and the Netherlands: according to Apple, Siri AI isn’t available yet on iPhone and iPad in the EU. On the Mac it is, but only in English. This ChatGPT plugin does work with your iCloud Mail and Calendar on your iPhone, so it’s a handy option for now.
How to connect iCloud to ChatGPT, step by step
Don’t have ChatGPT yet? Start with our ChatGPT sign-up guide.
- Go to account.apple.com and sign in. Your Apple Account needs two-factor authentication.
- Choose Sign-In and Security, then App-Specific Passwords. Click Generate an app-specific password and follow the on-screen steps. Give it a clear name, such as ‘ChatGPT’.
- Copy the password right away: Apple only shows it once.
- Open ChatGPT and go to Settings > Plugins. Choose iCloud Mail or iCloud Calendar and select Install plugin.
- For Mail, enter your iCloud email address. For Calendar, enter your main Apple Account email, which may be a different address. Paste the app-specific password into the form.
- Click Connect. Doesn’t it work? Check that you’re using the right email address.
- Want both? Connect Mail and Calendar separately.
Try it now: 5 ChatGPT prompts for iCloud Mail and Calendar
Type @ or tap + in the chat box, choose iCloud Mail or iCloud Calendar and try:
- Find an email: “Find the latest email from my dentist. When is my next appointment?”
- What do I need to answer? “Which emails from the last three days do I really need to answer? Give me five at most, most important first.”
- See your week: “What’s on my calendar this week? List it day by day.”
- Add an event: “Add the dinner on Friday 6 November at 7 pm to my calendar. Use the address from [name]’s email.”
- Prepare a reply: “Write a short, friendly reply to [name]’s email. Show it to me first and don’t send anything yet.”
Always check the result: AI can misread a date or a name.
Using ChatGPT with iCloud safely: what to watch out for
- Never give your regular Apple password. Never paste a password into a chat.
- Go to Settings > Plugins > Permissions and choose Always ask. The default is Allow low-risk actions: ChatGPT then does small things without asking.
- An email can hide instructions meant for AI. Don’t let ChatGPT blindly follow a suspicious email.
- Is Improve the model for everyone on? Then OpenAI may use information from connected apps for training. Switch it off if you don’t want that.
- Done? Disconnect in ChatGPT and remove the app-specific password at account.apple.com (Remove or Revoke All). Disconnecting alone doesn’t switch that password off. Changing your main Apple password revokes all app-specific passwords.
