What is the I'm so sorry trend on TikTok?
It's a photo carousel you swipe through. The first photo is an edited version of an old picture, for example made with AI: a stunning costume, perfect hair. Each next photo owns up to one fib, until the last one is the real thing, captioned "I'm so sorry".
According to Know Your Meme, TikToker @theywanthunter posted one of the first versions on 22 August 2026. A version by @girllover4u1 from 20 October passed 2.1 million views in two days. On X, only a handful of posts mentioned the "so sorry trend" on 20 October, and about 700 did on 22 October (our own count via X).
How to make the trend for free with Gemini or ChatGPT
- Find an old photo of yourself, ideally in a homemade Halloween costume. The original is your last slide.
- Open Gemini and click Images in the sidebar, or pick 🍌 Create images under Tools. No account yet? Follow our Gemini sign-up guide. Prefer ChatGPT? The free plan works too: just upload your photo in the chat (ChatGPT sign-up guide).
- Upload your photo and ask for the "perfect" version. For every next photo, start a new chat, upload your original photo again and ask for a version with one improvement fewer. Google says the image model in free Gemini isn't designed for many edits in a row.
- Save every version and put them in order, from perfect to real. Post them on TikTok or Instagram as a photo carousel.
Note: editing photos in Gemini is only available from age 18. Both free plans also have limits. In Gemini they refill every five hours until you reach a weekly cap. Making images uses up that limit faster.
Try it: prompts for your Halloween photo
“Edit this photo. Keep my face, pose, background and framing exactly the same. Turn my homemade [witch] costume into a movie-quality costume, with perfect hair and professional make-up.” “Edit this photo. Keep my face, pose, background, framing and hair exactly the same. Only turn my homemade costume into a movie-quality costume.”Repeat this and leave out one more improvement each time.
“As a kid I dressed up as [what you really wore], but in the first photo I look like [the perfect version]. Write four short, funny captions for my slides, from 'ok sorry, the hair was fake' to the last one: 'I'm so sorry'.”Childhood photos and AI: keep it safe
- Other people's kids need a yes first. Belgium's Federal Police warn that AI has made deepfakes easy to create. Only share a photo of someone else's child if their parents agree. Talk to your own child too: from about 7 or 8, the police say, kids are quick to give their opinion.
- Choose your audience. Keeping the carousel within a small family group, for example on WhatsApp, counts as private use, says the Dutch data protection authority. Post it publicly on TikTok or Instagram and you usually need consent from everyone recognisable in the photo.
- Funny, not hurtful. Some viral versions end by revealing a costume that turned out to be offensive. Not sure your old costume is still OK today? Pick another photo.
Real photo or AI? How to check with Gemini
Since August 2026 you can switch off Gemini's visible watermark. An invisible SynthID watermark is always added. Not sure about a photo? Upload it to Gemini and ask whether Google AI made it. That check only recognises Google images, so a "no" doesn't prove a photo is real.
