Gemini now lets you create and edit files in the chat

A tidy PDF of your handwritten notes, a short slide deck or a spreadsheet for your spending: Gemini could already make files like these. Since Thursday 29 October you can also preview and edit them right in the chat, without switching to another app. Google switched it on for all users. Here’s how it works and what to watch out for.

In short Ask Gemini for a file. It appears in the chat and you can change it right away: type in it yourself, or select a part and ask Gemini to change it.

Editing files in the Gemini chat: what’s new?

Since April 2026, Gemini can make files on request, such as a Google Doc, a spreadsheet, a PDF or a Word or Excel file. If you wanted to change something afterwards, you had to open the file in another app. On 29 October, Google announced that you can now preview and edit those files in the chat itself. Gemini’s post about it on X has been viewed more than 360,000 times.

Is it free, and does it work on your phone?

Google doesn’t mention a paid plan: it works for all users, including with a regular Google account, in every language the Gemini app supports. That includes Belgium and the Netherlands. You do need a Google account: you can’t upload files without signing in. On your phone you can only preview and edit PDFs. Documents, spreadsheets, slide decks, text files and code can only be edited on the gemini.google.com website for now, for example on your laptop.

Try it now: create and edit a file in Gemini

Don’t have Gemini yet? Start with our Gemini sign-up guide.

  1. Go to gemini.google.com and sign in with your Google account.
  2. Say clearly what kind of file you want, for example: “Make a spreadsheet to track my monthly spending, with columns for date, description, category and amount in euros.”
  3. The file appears in the chat. Open it full screen and fix anything that’s wrong yourself.
  4. Select a part that could be better and ask, for example: “Rewrite this part in simpler English, in three sentences at most.”
  5. Happy with it? Open it in Google Sheets or Slides, download it or save it to your Google Drive.

Safety tip
  • According to Google, human reviewers read some chats. So don’t put confidential data in your chat or file: no national ID number, bank details, passwords or medical information.
  • Don’t want reviewers to read your future chats to improve Google? Turn off Keep Activity or use a temporary chat.
  • Uploading a photo or document of someone else? Ask them first.
